State Police are urging motorists to slow down as kids head back to the classroom. Trooper Eddie Thomas said to be mindful of school zones along your commute and to pay extra attention to your surroundings.
“We want them to keep their eyes on the road, and stay away from the distracted driving that we often see. The main goal is vigilance for the school season,” said Thomas.
When in a school zone, Thomas reminds you to be mindful of cross-guards. He said they have the authority to control traffic flow at intersections and ensure student safety. Thomas also said to pay attention to speed limits in school zones.
“Use caution, slow down, and be aware of drop-off, and pick-up times of course at their respective schools, and be prepared for sudden stops as the traffic increases with parents dropping off and picking up children,” said Thomas.
Thomas also reminds motors school zones are cellphone-free zones.
“Those things on our cellphones can wait until another time but our children, our students are very important so when you’re driving through the school zone please pay attention, and put your phones down. We want a distraction-free zone,” said Thomas.
In school zones, motorists should make a concerted effort to minimize distractions, maintain an elevated level of alertness, and be mindful of children in the area.
