After a quiet August, AccuWeather is predicting 6 to 10 named storms during what it’s calling “Supercharged September.” AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jon Porter says we had a slow Atlantic hurricane season in August due to the Saharan Air Layer and wind shear.
“That’s why we’ve had limited development at the end of August but we see those factors changing as we head into September and that’s part of the reason why we are concerned about September” he explains.
Porter says we can expect storm to start seeing storms develop as early as August 27. And he says the Gulf’s record-high water temperatures create the perfect environment for storms to strengthen quickly.
“That could increase the risk for rapid intensification of those storms, which often brings greater impacts in terms of storm surge, damaging winds and flooding rainfall, among other concerns,” he says.
Besides wind and coastal flooding, Porter says hurricanes can cause tornadoes and inland flooding days after the storm blows through. Porter recommends you start preparing for hurricanes and tropical storms now so you’re not caught unaware if one threatens Louisiana.
“Don’t let your guard down now!” he advises. “We’re approaching the most dangerous time of the hurricane season. The hurricane season typically peaks in terms of the number and frequency of storms on September 10.”
AccuWeather is also predicting an abnormally long Atlantic hurricane season that could end as late as December.
