Library card holders will soon be able to check out any of Louisiana’s state parks or historic sites on the state’s dime with the launch of a new pilot program.
Through a partnership with the State Library of Louisiana and Louisiana State Parks, the Check Out Louisiana State Parks program launches October 1st.
“They will get a free one-day park pass for basically a car load,” says State Librarian Meg Placke. “It is really to introduce people if they want to see what our parks offer; and then hopefully, they’ll be return users.”
Placke says patrons can also check out a backpack for the occasion.
“We have binoculars, a compass, a magnifying glass, some outdoor ethics cards and guides to the wonderful natural resources that Louisiana has,” says Placke.
For now, only a select number of library systems are participating.
“We have 18 systems in the pilot program,” Placke says, “and hopefully we want to expand this.”
The state library in Baton Rouge is also participating.
Library systems participating in the Check Out Louisiana State Parks program:
- Calcasieu
- Claiborne
- East Baton Rouge
- Evangeline
- Iberville
- Jackson
- Jefferson
- Livingston
- Morehouse
- Richland
- St. Martin
- St. Mary
- St. Tammany
- Union
- Vermilion
- Vernon
- Washington
- Webster
Cardholders can obtain a free one-day park pass once every six months.
Placke says the libraries are excited about the launch of Check Out Louisiana State Parks.
“All of the libraries that are participating have the backpacks, they have the passes, and they are raring to go,” says Placke.
