Troopers from the Louisiana State Police are helping with relief efforts in North Carolina following Hurricane Helene.
“A team is currently assisting first responders by handing out supplies at distribution sites, staffing medical and evacuation shelters, and manning roadblocks for impassable and dangerous roads,” says State Police Capt. Nick Manale. “We have 20 troopers assisting our partners with the North Carolina Highway Patrol for a ten-day deployment.”
Capt. Manale says the level of devastation that the troopers are seeing is mind-boggling, even for those coming from a state accustomed to devastating hurricanes.
“Every storm is different,” says Manale, “and our troopers are up there certainly assisting our partners with a level of devastation that is equal to one of the major storms that we’ve had here in our state.”
Manale says if further relief efforts are needed beyond that, State Police may consider sending more troopers there.
“I think that’s something that we can certainly evaluate,” Manale says. “I mean, we have made a commitment to assist our partners in North Carolina; so at the end of this ten-day deployment, we’ll certainly evaluate the need and the availability of our resources to continue that deployment.”
