With just hours to go before voters go to the polls, both political parties in Louisiana are pulling out the stops in getting out the vote.
Cory Dennis, the executive director of the Louisiana Republican Party, says if early voting is any indication, Election Day should be a good day for the GOP in the state.
“We’re very excited and very encouraged about the number of Republicans that have already voted early,” says Dennis. “I think people will crawl through glass to vote for Donald Trump.”
One person who will disagree with that notion is the state’s Democratic former governor, John Bel Edwards.
“This feels like the most important election ever to me,” Edwards said at a small rally at state Democratic party headquarters in Baton Rouge. “And I’m very happy to tell you all and everyone else that I voted for the next president of the United States, Vice President Kamala Harris.”
Dennis says if 2020 taught us anything, it’s that every vote counts.
“People are not leaving it up to chance anymore,” says Dennis. “They’re making sure they cast their vote. We’re not taking anything for granted. I think you’re seeing that not just in Louisiana but across the country.”
Edwards said there will be at least one bit of good news for Democrats coming out of Louisiana in this election.
“I can guarantee you that the State of Louisiana will at least double the number of members of Congress who are Democrats from Louisiana,” Edwards said to applause at Friday’s rally, referring to the race for the redrawn 6th Congressional District, which opinion polls suggest is almost guaranteed to flip to the Democrats.
Opinion polls further show that no federal race in Louisiana is competitive, with Trump almost guaranteed to carry the state and the state’s five other House seats almost certainly to remain with their current political parties.
Both Dennis and Edwards are telling their party supporters who didn’t vote in early voting to get to the polls Tuesday.
“If you haven’t voted yet, make a plan, stick to it and vote conservative up and down the ticket,” says Dennis. “Make sure you call your friends, your kids (as long as they’re at least 18 years of age), your cousins — make sure they have a plan to get out and vote on Tuesday.”
Edwards says Democrats can make significant inroads by simply voting.
“When we show up, guess what — we win,” Edwards noted. “My two terms as governor sort of proved that, right? It wasn’t supposed to happen, but it did happen — and it happened twice.”
