This year, you can host a Thanksgiving feast for ten for relatively little money.
“In Louisiana, that’s going to cost you on average $45.84, which is still $3 lower than it was last year,” says Avery Davidson with the Louisiana Farm Bureau.
Furthermore, that’s considerably less than the national average.
“$12.24 less than the national average, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation,” Davidson points out.
Davidson says that low cost is spurred in large part by a drop in the price of turkeys.
“When you’re looking at a 16-lb. turkey in Louisiana, you’re looking at paying about $15.44 on average,” says Davidson, “and that’s less than what you can expect to pay across the country, where the average price is $25.67 this year.”
And the drop in turkey prices is due to an abundant supply.
“That’s why you’ll see some grocery stores running promotions where if you buy a ham, you might get a free turkey,” Davidson says.
Davidson says part of the reason for our comparatively low price is the fact that it costs less to transport the goods to your local supermarkets.
“We’re fortunate here in Louisiana that we have some of the largest ports in the country right here,” says Davidson. “We also have the Mississippi River that goes through. We have I-10 and I-20 and rail that all come through.”
