The U.S. Gymnastics Championships will return to New Orleans for the first time in 30 years. The event will be held August 7th through the 10th at the Smoothie King Center. Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation CEO Jay Cicero said the Smoothie King Center will showcase the nation’s top gymnasts competing for national titles and spots on the U.S. National Team, which will help determine the roster for the 2025 World Championships in Jakarta.
“It’s been 30 years since this event has been here, and we’re extremely happy to be able to get USA Gymnastics Championship back here.”
Cicero emphasized New Orleans’ reputation for hosting world-class events and the importance of the post-Olympic year as athletes began preparing for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and emphasized the local excitement for gymnastics due to LSU’s national success.
“Without LSU and the prominence of their program and the growth of their program and the growth of the attendance for their program over the past 4 or 5 years, I’m not sure we would’ve had the faith that we could sell the ticket and get the support for this event.”
New Orleans previously hosted the championships in 1995, and Baton Rouge hosted it in 1977. Cicero said this event promises to bring significant energy and interest to the Crescent City.
“This is hopefully the beginning of renewing a relationship that we can host other events that USA Gymnastics has, and again it goes back to because of what LSU has done.”
