An Opelousas man was arrested after fleeing a Youngsville mental health facility on foot, stealing a school bus and causing a four-vehicle crash in Lafayette on Sunday night. Lafayette PD Senior Corporal Ashley Wood says they’ve identified 26-year-old Marion Baker as the suspect.
“He elected not to go to the facility, and instead stole an unoccupied school bus,” Wood said. “He then drove recklessly into oncoming traffic causing a multivehicle collision with four vehicles.”
Lafayette PD reports several individuals received moderate injuries as a result of the crash.
Wood says following the collision, Baker fled the scene and stole a truck from a bystander who had stopped to help.
“They were able to find him in Rayne, Louisiana where he had wrecked the vehicle that he had stolen from the bystander. At that time, he was apprehended by law enforcement.
Wood says Baker is currently being held without bail in Lafayette Parish Jail.
“For various traffic violation charges. He was charged with reckless operation of a vehicle, hit and run driving, theft of a motor vehicle as well as theft.”
