Lawmakers either returning to Capitol Hill for the 119th Congress or going there for the first time are honing their agendas for the session that starts a week from Friday.
That includes Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy, who says one of his priorities is energy independence, saying he thinks Congress will move quickly on policies so that America won’t have to rely on other countries for energy.
“If we do it right, we’ll have a lot of energy left over that we can share with our friends,” says Sen. Kennedy.
Another of Kennedy’s priorities is securing the southern border, restoring policies set forth by former and future President Donald Trump.
“President Biden chose to rescind them all on his first day as president. That’s why we have 12-million foreign nationals in our country, and we don’t have the slightest idea who they are or where they are,” Kennedy says. “We’ve added by population about four Nebraskas to America, and it’s just got to stop.”
Kennedy says he will also work to renew the tax cuts from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that are set to expire.
“If we don’t renew them, that’ll be a four-trillion-dollar tax increase on America,” says Kennedy. “We’re going to look at the things we did in that bill and see what works and what didn’t work and get rid of the ones that didn’t work and keep the ones that did work.”
Kennedy says another of his priorities is strengthening the military to rein in people like Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
“I don’t want America to have to be the world’s policeman, but I don’t want President Xi or President Putin or the Ayatolla in Iran to be the world’s policeman either,” Kennedy says.
