Baton Rouge Congressman Garret Graves is departing Congress after nearly a decade, choosing not to run for reelection due to redistricting that significantly altered his constituency.
“It’s just been an awesome ten years, and just an honor to represent this part of South Louisiana and to make this the community we deserve and not the one that we have.”
Known for his behind-the-scenes approach, Graves focused on practical infrastructure and disaster recovery projects rather than high-profile legislation. His accomplishments include the Red Snapper regulation returned to the state, using technology to comply with the privacy act, and upgrades to Baton Rouge-area highways like the Washington Street exit.
“Why is it that we have this part where the interstates funnel to a single land, and so we worked with then Secretary Shawn Wilson to get the funds to open up that new terrace exit.”
Reflecting on Congress, Graves criticized the rise of theatrics over substance and emphasized his pride in meaningful achievements.
“I mean I could go on and on about accomplishments, but just trying to find those things that the community has identified as being priority and getting the government to provide the level of service that the community truly deserves
