Saints and Pelicans owner Gayle Benson has some tough decisions ahead of her as the leader of two of the worst teams in professional sports. Nola.com columnist Jeff Duncan said Benson is a proud New Orleanian, and she’s as frustrated as anyone.
“She takes that very seriously. She wants these organizations and teams to be very successful, and it hasn’t played out that way. She trusts the people in charge to do their job to make these teams successful ,and I think that trust right now has to be a little shaken.”
The Saints have made significant roster and coaching changes following the departure of Sean Payton but find themselves again in limbo with a top 10 draft pick and in search of a new head coach. Fans think it might be time for a new general manager, but Duncan said he’d be shocked if GM Mickey Loomis got the boot.
“I do think there’s gonna be a lot of changes across the board in the organization whether it’s front office, medical training staff, the roster itself, the coaching staff, of course we know there’s gonna be changes there. So I do think it’s gonna be pretty extensive, but I don’t know if they’ll go as far as to quote unquote clean house.”
The Pelicans are on pace for less than 15 wins in a year meant to be their leap into contention after trading for former All-Star Dejounte Murray. Injuries have yet again derailed their season as trade rumors swirl amidst contract disputes. Duncan said whether it’s a star player or Head Coach Willie Green “something has to change.”
“I mean you’re 5 and 27. People aren’t coming to the games. It’s not working on the court, and I think people are still frustrated right now in and out of the Pelicans operations that change is gonna be inevitable there to some degree not just with the roster but with the coaching staff.”
