South Louisiana is under a winter storm warning as residents prepare for a rare heavy snow event expected to begin tonight. According to LSU Public Health Climatologist Barry Keim, this is a generational storm for South Louisiana.
“Let me emphasize, the fact that this is going to be a South Louisiana event. The heaviest snowfall are going to be falling between the I-10 and I-12 corridor and I-20 further north up by Monroe and Shreveport is a little too far north to really experience any of the major snow here.
Keim says it’s expected to snow most of the day on Tuesday and prepare for more than just flurries.
“Snow totals look to be something to the effect of 4 to 8 inches along the I-10 and I-12 corridor and as we look further south we are looking at 3 to 5 inches, and this event to extend all the way to the coastline in this particular case.”
Keim says the snowfall will end tomorrow night, but Wednesday will be brutally cold, and the snow will stick around. He advises residents to stay off the roads if possible and take necessary precautions to stay warm and safe.
“Today is the day. It’s cold out there right now, but its safe to drive around. Go get whatever supplies your need and just be prepared to hunker down the next couple of days, and just enjoy the event from home and hang around your neighborhood.”
