St. Bernard Parish recently experienced an extraordinary weather event, receiving 11.5 inches of snow, an unprecedented amount for the region. St. Bernard Parish GOHSEP Director John Rahaim (ram) described it as the most snow he has ever witnessed in Louisiana, calling it a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence.
“I lived here my whole life except when I was in the Air Force, and yesterday it was just a beautiful day. Snow was falling. I haven’t seen that much snow since I left Colorado.”
Rahaim emphasized the importance of safety and caution when dealing with snow and ice. Many residents in the area may be unfamiliar with winter weather hazards, increasing the risk of accidents and injuries.
“People getting out a wanting to see it they want to get out and experience it. Slipping on the sidewalks because it’s very slippery out there yesterday. So, we had quite a few calls for service for the fire and sheriff’s department yesterday for people going out and doing things they shouldn’t be doing.”
Rahaim recommends staying off the roads unless necessary, using proper footwear, and insulating pipes to prevent damage. Now, the focus turns to cleaning up.
“So, everybody made it pretty good except for the ones who got out and got in an accident of some sort. So, we’re trying to pick up the pieces now and get the roads cleared off and get back to some kind of normalcy here pretty soon.”
