Sen. John Kennedy emphasized the need for Congress to prioritize spending cuts while maintaining national defense, extending tax cuts, and tackling inflation. Speaking on the Senate floor, Kennedy warned that failing to extend the 2017 tax cuts would severely damage the economy.
“And those annual deficits roll over into national debt and we’ve now got $36 trillion worth of national debt. We’re gonna run out of digits. That’s the most debt we’ve ever had. Well over 100% of GDP.”
Kennedy argued for increasing defense funding due to threats from China, Russia, and Iran, stressing that weakness invites aggression.
“I don’t want America to be the world’s policeman, but I don’t want President Xi or President Putin or the Ayatollah in Iran to be the worlds policeman either, and weakness invites the wolves. We’ve got to spend more money on defense.”
Kennedy called for returning spending to pre-pandemic levels, citing a recent Office of Management and Budget memorandum as a step in that direction. Kennedy dismissed concerns over spending reductions, urging Americans to stay grounded and recognize the necessity of fiscal discipline.
“We’re spending money around here like its pond water…like its ditch water.”
