The Philadelphia Eagles put together a dominating performance to beat the two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs 40 to 22 in Super Bowl 59 in New Orleans. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was named the game’s MVP as he threw two touchdown passes, one of them to Amite’s Devonta Smith and he also rushed for a touchdown.
Hurts said afterwards it was the culmination of a long journey that included a benching in the 2018 College Football Playoff Championship game while at Alabama, a subsequent transfer to Oklahoma and a loss to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl two years ago.
“It’s been a long journey, it’s been a journey of ups and downs, highs and lows, I’ve always stayed true to it to in the end, having this vision of being the best that I can be,” Hurts said.
But even Hurts will tell you, defense wins championships, and the Eagles defense was phenomenal. KC only had 23 yards in the first half, and Philadelphia sacked quarterback Patrick Mahomes six times and intercepted him twice, returning one for a TD.
“I feel like I didn’t play to my standard,” Mahomes said.
Mahomes is now 3-2 in Super Bowl games.
His head coach Andy Reid is 3-3.
“Today was a rough day, we didn’t play well in any of the phases, didn’t coach good enough, they did a nice job,” Reid said.
And the city of New Orleans did a nice job hosting the Super Bowl and officials are looking forward to bidding for a future Super Bowl. Santa Clara, Los Angeles and Atlanta are hosting the next three Super Bowls. The Super Bowl in 2029 will likely fall on the Sunday before Mardi Gras so that will no work. So you’re looking at the 2030s before New Orleans can host its 12th Super Bowl.
During Kendric Lamar’s halftime show, security personnel ran onto the field and tackled a man running around holding up a Sudanese-Palestinian flag. “Sudan” and “Gaza” were written on it. The NFL says the person detained was one of Lamar’s performers and no one involved with the production knew that this individual would do this.
