The Louisiana Department of Insurance has announced lottery registration for the next round of Louisiana Fortify Homes Program (LFHP) grants will open tomorrow at 8 a.m. and will close Sunday at 5 p.m. Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple says homeowners can apply for a chance to receive up to 10-thousand-dollars in grants to upgrade their roofs.
“This is the second time we’ve switched over to using the lottery system. I just think it’s a better approach. Not everybody has the opportunity to get on, on a first come first serve basis when you have a limited number of grants to award.”
Homeowners who applied previously but were not chosen must reapply.
Temple says it needs to be your primary residence, have a homestead exemption, have wind and hail, and have flood insurance. As well limited ot Louisiana’s Coastal Zone. Temple says thousands of people applied the last round and if you didn’t win you will have to reapply.
“I think the last round we had 11,718 people register for the grant, and also I want to point out that you have to reregister.’
After the registration period ends, 1,000 participants will be randomly selected and notified via email. Temple says if you don’t get selected for the grant and choose to put a FORTIFIED roof on your home there are still benefits.
“A FORTIFIED roof is an insurable roof. That is a surefire way to get a reduction on your insurance premium on your home.”
on.”
Temple says with over 1,800 FORTIFIED roof grants issued since 2023, its making Louisiana more attractive to insurance companies to do business.
