The Trump administration approved a major liquefied natural gas (LNG) export project in Louisiana, marking the first such authorization since Biden’s pause on new LNG exports a year ago. Louisiana Energy Export Partners spokesperson Randy Hayden says Louisiana should be excited.
“President Trump has kept with his promises and the Department of Energy has approved Commonwealth LNG’s initial proposal to move forward with their project.”
The Commonwealth LNG project in Cameron Parish will export 9.5 million metric tons per year to non-free trade agreement countries. A final decision on investment by the company is expected in September.
Hayden stated that LNG exports boost the economy, and create jobs for Louisianians.
“We had workers sitting around twiddling their thumbs. You can’t do that when there’s latterly billions of dollars on the line. So, we’re very excited about this first move.”
Commonwealth LNG plans a final investment decision in September 2025, pending regulatory approvals. Hayden says it’s a big move for all proposed LNG plants.
“In the Gulf Coast, you’re looking at probably seven facilities that have made initial plans and are trying to move forward. That certainly makes the Gulf Coast the world leader in LNG exports.”
The Trump Administration wants to increase LNG exports so that Europe does not have to rely on Russian gas.
