The Humane Society of Louisiana’s parade horse adoption program has been a success as it enters its seventh year. Human Society Board Member Rena Sweeney says to prevent this, the Humane Society took over adoptions, using social media to find suitable homes.
“So we partnered with the stable to put an end to that practice and luckily now, over the course of the program, we have adopted out just over 120 horses>
This year, 21 horses are available, with strong interest from potential adopters. Sweeney says adoption fees range from $650 to $1,500 and will likely need training.
“We don’t know if they have been ridden a lot in the past or if they have any particular personality traits that need to be taken into consideration.”
Sweeney says photos, adoption fees, and applications are available at Mardigrashorses.com.
“So, once people put in an application and it’s been approved then they’re able to come out to the stables in person to see the horses, look them over, and decide on which one they think is going to be the perfect fit for their family.”
