Saints head coach Kellen Moore has reportedly hired 54-year-old Doug Nussmeier as his offensive coordinator. Host of the LOCKED ON SAINTS podcast, Ross Jackson, says the hire makes complete sense, because of the relationship Moore and Nussmeier have already built.
“He and Doug Nussmeier had worked together at each of their last three stops, with the Dallas Cowboys as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. They made moves in the same position, same relationship over with the Los Angeles Chargers, and then did their year together, winning a Super Bowl together with the Philadelphia Eagles,” Jackson said.
Nussmeier, the father of LSU starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, will be entering his 25th year as a coach and he’s been an offensive coordinator on the college level, at Alabama, Michigan and Florida. Jackson says Moore will call plays, but Nussmeier will have a big role in offensive game planning.
“He (Nussmeier) won’t be necessarily architecting the offense, not calling the offense, but helping to get it installed, helping to get it taught, and helping to make sure that everything is translated. He’ll probably have a little bit of input too, when it comes to gameplan and game input, because he has a ton of experience,” Jackson explained.
Nussmeier, a native of Oregon, played college football at Idaho and was selected by the Saints during the fourth round of the 1994 NFL Draft. Jackson says Moore is looking to connect with the city, and having a former Saints player on his staff helps him do that.
“What you’re seeing is a concerted effort into leaning into the culture and the community. I think a guy like Nussmeier brings a little bit of that,” Jackson said.
