If you’re in the 318 area code, which encompasses all of North Louisiana and most of Central Louisiana, start dialing ten digits for all calls, including local calls, today.
It’s to prepare for the upcoming introduction of the new 457 area code.
“We have run out of numbers for people to use, and so we had to get some extra numbers,” says Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell. “And so everybody thought 457 was pretty logical.”
You have six months to get used to dialing ten digits for local calls in the 318 area code before it becomes mandatory August 25th.
“If you’re going to do it when you text people, it shouldn’t be that big of a deal,” says Campbell. “It’s going to be a little problem to get used to it, but we’ll get used to it.”
New telephone numbers in the current 318 service area will be assigned the new 457 area code starting September 25th.
Campbell says there’s an easy way to remember the new area code.
“For you people that know anything about guns, and there’s a lot of people who know a lot about guns — it’s 100 plus 357,” Campbell said.
Those who get the new 457 area code will also be required to dial ten digits for all calls.
