An Oil City man was arrested at Northwood High School after allegedly threatening and attacking a school resource officer with an umbrella. Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office Lt. Breck Scott says 70-year-old Gary Fenner arrived at the school around 9 a.m. to pick up his grandchild but was denied access due to a tornado-related lockdown.
“Mr. Fenner didn’t like that answer so he told him he was going to kill him and then he charged him with an umbrella. He was able to strike Deputy Nunnery and at that time Deputy Nunnery was able to get his taser out and tase Mr. Fenner.”
Scott says Fenner got up and attempted to fight. Nunnery and a school security officer subdued and arrested him. Fenner faces multiple charges, including battery of a peace officer, resisting arrest, aggravated assault on a peace officer, disturbing the peace, and unlawful school disruption. Scott says this isn’t the first time encountering Fenner.
“We’ve dealt with him two other times. One in 2021 and one in 2018. The charges that he was put on in 2021 were aggravated assault with a firearm and illegal use of a weapon.”
Scott emphasized when schools are on lockdown its for security purposes to protect students and faculty.
“What people need to realize that if they are trying to get one of their children out of school during a lockdown that it’s not going to happen. They just need to wait a couple mins, 30 minutes for once that bad serve weather goes through then they will go off lockdown then you can come and pick up youre children.”
He is being held at Caddo Correctional Center.
