Former Louisiana First Lady Alice Foster passed away last Thursday at her historic home, Oaklawn Manor, in St. Mary Parish. She was the wife of former Governor Murphy “Mike” Foster for 40 years until his passing in 2020. Former Press Secretary for Governor Foster, Marsanne Golsby says she was an amazing woman.
“She treated everybody on the staff, not just me, but she treated everybody on the staff like they were special. I didn’t get to go to the Governor’s funeral so this is my chance to grieve for both of them.”
During her tenure as First Lady, Alice Foster championed numerous causes, including The Governor’s Mansion Foundation, Keep Louisiana Beautiful, Breast Cancer Awareness, and the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program. She also promoted children’s education through the book You Are Sunshine. However, Golsby says her legacy extended beyond her public service, as she was “She was formidable and kind, and wonderful. This is a deep loss for me personally and for the staffers. They treated us all with great respect. Till this day I’ve never had a better boss.”
Golsby says she and the governor had a strong relationship that complimented each other and says she helped make the Governor who he was as a leader.
“I think he wound not have been nearly successful as he was as governor if he didn’t get to go home to her. She was a powerful woman, classy, and the appetite of a southern woman, and with nerves of steel.”
Funeral services will be held at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Franklin, Louisiana, on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at 12 p.m
