Louisiana voters will be heading to the polls in a few weeks. Here is a look at what is on the ballot. PAR President Steven Procopio says that Amendment 1 grants the Louisiana Supreme Court the authority to discipline out-of-state lawyers and permits the legislature to establish specialized courts.
“There’s a lot of for example Drug Courts that you will see at the local level. The difference here is now they can be set up at a regional or a state-wide court.”
Procopio says Amendment 3 lets the legislature decide which felony crimes allow juveniles under 17 to be tried as adults, removing the current constitutional list.
“And then the legislature can change that stature with a 2/3rds vote to try to add things, change it or remove things and that an attempt to sort of give the legislature more flexibility on this particular issue.”
Procopio says Amendment 4 would change how judicial vacancies are filled, using the earliest election date instead of waiting up to 12 months.
“So, this would give, in certain cases, you can take more than 12 months to fill a judicial vacancy.”
