A recent poll by JMC Analytics and Polling, commissioned by Unite America, found that Louisiana voters overwhelmingly favor the open primary system across party lines. JMC Founder John Couvillon says support for an open primary has the advantage of simplicity.
12-“Basically, you’re allowed to vote for any candidate you want unfiltered by the party affiliation of that candidate. So, I think the simplicity and convenience are what voters like because you only have two elections; a primary and a runoff.”
Couvillon says under the proposed system it would be split treatment. You would also have party primary, a party runoff, and then a general election.
9-“It would be six months later. So, it’s gonna be a big change to what we’ve been doing for the approximately last 50 years.”
Couvillon says the biggest surprise he saw on the poll was that only a third of those polled were aware there was going to be a change.
12-“And that to me creates the tremendous potential for chaos when you have voters going to the polls next April and they are going to be told that they can’t vote for some of their favorite candidates.”
