Morgan City Police arrest a 71-year-old woman on animal cruelty charges after finding several dead cats inside her home. Captain John Schaff says officers came across the scene while conducting a welfare check on Sheri Hite. Schaff says officers saw a dead cat through a window and smelled a strong odor. Upon entering, they discovered many more dead cats.
“They executed a search warrant on the residence, and we located multiple dead animals or cats inside the residence, including locating fourteen of those dead animals in a freezer,” Schaff said.
Schaff says Hite told officers she picked up the cats from Baton Rouge to take care of them and planned to dispose of the cats found in the freezer.
“Due to the extremity of things and the amount of cats we’ve located, they just weren’t getting the proper care. She was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, 23 counts,” Shaff explained.
Schaff says while he can’t speak to her mental state, he believes that will be made clear during her trial.
“I can guarantee you that, through the judicial system, they’re going to be able to determine what type of mental state she has through the judicial process,” Shaff said.
