Two of the three people charged with first-degree murder in the death of St. Tammany Parish Sgt. Clint Candies are now charged with kidnapping.
Sheriff’s Lt. Suzanne Carboni says driver Adrian Waughtal and Mason Fischer, both 17, were holding two girls in the car against their will during the pursuit.
“The two females (who) were in the back seat of the car, were pleading with them to stop and let them out,” says Lt. Carboni. “Fischer and Waughtal refused.”
Michael Lanier, also 17, is the third suspect charged with first-degree murder, but Carboni says he’s not being charged with kidnapping.
“The investigation has determined that he did not make any effort to keep those females in the vehicle,” Carboni says.
Carboni stresses, however, that while the girls were being held in the vehicle against their will during the pursuit, they were not forced into it by the suspects.
“They were in that vehicle originally of their own will. It is when that pursuit started that the girls said, we want out,” says Carboni.
At this time the two girls are not being charged with any crimes, but Carboni says the investigation is ongoing.
As for Waughtal and Fischer, both were rebooked.
While Fischer had previously bonded out, he is now back behind bars.
