Experian has teamed up with LSU women’s basketball star Flau’jae Johnson to help relieve 5 million dollars of consumer debt for 5,000 families in Louisiana. Christina Roman with Experian says the partnership is perfect since Experian and Johnson both promote financial literacy.
“So, given that Louisiana is where she played, and is also one of the states with the highest poverty rates, we thought it was a natural fit to really make a tangible difference,” Roman said.
Roman says Experian originally committed 5 million dollars to this initiative and they tacked on an additional $100 thousand dollars for every game LSU won in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, which was three.
Roman says Louisiana has one of the highest poverty rates in the country, and relieving 5 million dollars in consumer debt could be life-changing.
“Debt comes with a lot of baggage and stress and constantly feeling like you can’t get ahead or catch up. We engaged ForgiveCo, which is a public benefit corporation (PBC), to select and administer debt relief for 5,000 families in Louisiana,” Roman said.
Johnson says money management is extremely important and she’s learning firsthand as she is one of the biggest NIL earners in college athletics.
Roman says the 5,000 families who will have their debt relieved were chosen by ForgiveCo.
“The company that we’re engaging with, ForgiveCo, they actually select the residents that are going to have their debt paid off, so they select, and then they administer the debt payoff,” Roman explained.
