A man and a woman are dead following a plane crash near Raceland. Lafourche Parish President Archie Chaisson says the 1976 Cessna 210L owned by Southern Seaplanes went down last night in a remote marsh area and it was located two miles north of Highway 182 near the intersection of Highway 90.
“About 7:30 this morning, an aircraft was found in what we thought was a wreckage site. Sheriff’s office personnel, along with our Homeland Security staff from Lafourche Parish went out in some airboats and actually located the wreckage site,” Chaisson said.
Authorities have identified the victims as Lyle Panepinto and Lauren Menkemeller. Chaisson says Panepinto is the owner of Southern Seaplanes and Menkemeller was training as a pilot for the company.
“They were apparently doing some training hours and logging some hours on an aircraft. They were en route from Belle Chasse to the Houma airport when, unfortunately, the plane went down,” Chaisson explained.
The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the cause of the crash.
