This week is Love the Boot Week, a statewide anti-litter initiative in Louisiana.. The campaign, aimed at beautifying the state through volunteerism, has grown significantly since its inception four years ago, now including hundreds of groups across all 64 parishes. Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser, who leads the effort, says there are over 20,000 volunteers this year helping to clean up the state.
“We’ve been gaining momentum each year. It’s actually a movement now. Everything from enforcing the litter laws to putting more garbage cans in the parkin lot.”
Nungesser says the campaign encourages community involvement, noting that individuals who participate in cleanup efforts are 80% less likely to litter in the future.
“So our goal is to get more people involved. Only about 20% of Louisianans actually litter and we pay the price for it.”
Nungesser envisions a cleaner Louisiana, where visitors are impressed by its beauty.
“Get involved, and help us make Louisiana beautiful. This is something we can all take pride in, in cleaning up our great state.”
During Love the Boot Week last year, 19, 441 volunteers removed 347 tons of litter. They also planted 921 trees, 4,408 plants and refurbished 366 gardens.
The event total has grown by 38% this year.
