Louisiana is once again participating in the federal SUN Bucks program. The program provides eligible children between the ages of five and 18 $120 to use on food during the summer months when they’re out of school. Tim Jenkins, the economic stability director for the Department of Children and Family Services, says for those already receiving SNAP benefits, there’s nothing that they need to do.
“It will automatically certify kids that receive SNAP this past year. And if you receive SNAP, the money will be loaded to your family and your household SNAP card,” Jenkins explained.
Jenkins says those participating in other programs will get a new SUN Bucks card sent to them.
“If you were on Medicaid or on one of the TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) programs, or you were at a school where you participated in the National School Lunch Program, we send you a new card. That new card comes in the child’s name,” Jenkins said.
Jenkins says families have only 122 days – about four months – to use the $120, and the money may only be used for certain food items.
“Anything right now that you can currently buy with Snap benefits, you can buy with SUN Bucks. Of course, no paper products, no alcohol and nothing like that,” Jenkins explained.
