A bill that would ban wagering on the outcomes of elections advances to the full Senate; and given the unanimous vote in the Governmental Affairs Committee, the odds are strong that it could end up on Governor Landry’s desk. Secretary of State Nancy Landry testified in support of the bill, saying people with a money stake on elections will go to great lengths to ensure a certain outcome by illicit means.
“I believe it’s critical that we close the door on any attempt by individuals with big money on the line, to break the law and try to manipulate the results of an election,” Landry said.
Secretary Landry notes that such a rule already exists for election staff.
“I’ve already issued an internal policy which prohibits election staff in Louisiana from wagering, on elections and election outcomes. I believe for the security of our elections, that this ban should apply statewide,” Landry said.
Landry says Louisiana already has some of the most secure elections in the nation, and she wants to keep it that way.
” We are ranked number two in the nation now in election integrity and we’re very proud of that. And we want to stay there,” Landry said.
