Louisiana State Police are increasing patrols to protect first responders on roadsides this week. LSP Public Information Officer Ryan Davis says Troop F will join a special enforcement day on Wednesday, targeting drivers who violate the state’s Move Over Law.
“So, that will involve officers primarily tasked, along with their normal duties of looking for motorists not adhering to the Move Over Law. So, there will be a lot of traffic stops. A lot of education, and ultimately, there will be some citations that come from this.”
The law requires motorists to slow down and change lanes, if safe, when approaching emergency vehicles with flashing lights. Davis stressed that drivers must move away from stopped emergency vehicles and reduce speed.
“And the reason being, traditionally, one of the biggest causes of injury and death for officers, firemen, ambulance workers, and wrecker drivers is being struck by vehicles when they’re on traffic stops or working crashes or recovering vehicles from the roadside.”
The campaign will cover highways in northeast Louisiana, including Troops F, E, and G. . Davis reminds drivers to stay alert, avoid distractions, and respect roadside responders’ safety.
“Our motorist needs to be mindful. They need to be looking as far ahead as they can so they can be prepared to make evasive maneuvers if the need arises.”
