Today is Memorial Day, the day that many people consider to be the start of summer – even though the solstice is still a few weeks away.
Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Charlton Meginley says in his view, this is the most important holiday of the year.
“I think of the 4,000 Louisianians who’ve lost their lives during World War II and the end result of World War II, which essentially protected freedom throughout the world,” says Sec. Meginley.
In all, more than 11,000 Louisianians have died in combat throughout history.
“We all acknowledge that there’s a possibility that there could come a point where we would be asked to put our lives on the line, and most of us made it home,” says Meginley. “Obviously, many did not.”
Meginley says this country owes a debt of gratitude to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.
“The lives that we live in 2025 (are) directly correlated to those heroes who sacrificed their lives to protect our freedoms that we enjoy today.” says Meginley. “It’s important for them to just take a moment and reflect on why we get to do those things at the start of the summer.”
There will be several events throughout the state paying tribute to America’s fallen heroes.
“All of our cemeteries will have presentations and ceremonies to recognize those who sacrificed all,” Meginley says. “And you don’t have to look too hard from all the events in the local community where so many organizations will be acknowledging this day.”
