After an infant in St. Tammany Parish died last weekend while sharing a bed while sharing a bed with his mother and a sibling, Coroner Dr. Christopher Tape has re-released a PSA warning people of the dangers of babies sleeping in the same bed with others.
“We initially took this video from another agency in North Louisiana about 10 years ago,” sys James Hartman, a spokesman for the St. Tammany Parish coroner’s office. “We rebooted it then — with their permission — for us. And in light of last weekend’s events, Dr. Tape just wanted to dust it off and put it out there again.”
Hartman says the 30-second spot send a very important and powerful message.
“These are entirely preventable deaths. And Dr. Tape just wants to remind people how dangerous it can be to share a bed with a child,” says Hartman. “It’s not an everyday occurrence, but when it does happen, it’s certainly tragic and it’s always preventable.”
There are simple rules to follow when putting infants to sleep.
“Pediatricians and pathologists and ER doctors always recommend the ABC rule for infants sleeping — Alone, on their Back and in a Crib.”
