Turkey callers from across the nation have flocked to Hammond for the Louisiana State & U.S. Open Turkey Calling Championships at the Southern Boyz Outdoor Store. Contest Manager Hunter Lemoine says the competition is open to all ages, with preliminary events starting tomorrow, and 12 gobblers from each division will compete in the finals on Saturday.
“Come to the event, the final stuff is like the cat’s meow. That’s the cream of the crop right there. Guys from all around the country are coming to compete. You’re gonna have the best Turkey Callers on that stage Saturday.”
Lemoine says the event invites both competitors and spectators to enjoy a weekend of entertainment, including a gun raffle, live music, banquets, and food.
“I’m sure somebody will be cooking jambalaya somewhere around there, and then we’ve got 14 or 15 guns to raffle off. We got all kinds of good prizes outside the hunting and fishing trips.”
On Saturday, Southern Boyz will also host its first annual cookoff to benefit TARC, a nonprofit supporting children and adults with disabilities. Whether you’re a seasoned turkey caller or just looking for a fun weekend activity, there’s something for everyone at this unique and lively outdoor event.
“If you want to just come spectate, you can leave them a tip, and all the money goes to the TARC foundation, and with your tip, they will serve you a plate of food. It will be 30 teams cooking in some big ole black iron pots. So, it’s gonna be pretty cool.”
