Wednesday’s win over Arkansas was just another great moment in LSU baseball history at the College World Series. The Tigers have had several dramatic moments in Omaha that are part of their seven national championships.
Coastal Carolina has one title. That came in 2016, and they can care less that LSU is going after its CWS championship.
“We are not really worried about the Tigers,” said Coastal Carolina 2B Blake Barthol, “We’re more of a self-oriented team, worried about our team and our team only.”
That mindset has helped the Chanticleers win 26 straight games.
LSU is the favorite to win this championship series that begins Saturday night, but again Coastal doesn’t care.
“We have extreme confidence in everything we do on both sides of the ball, we look forward to competing against them, but at the end of the day we take care of business on our side. We really respect the opponent, but playing Coastal baseball is the way to win.”
What is Coastal Carolina baseball?
On offense, it’s scoring first, scoring at least 7 runs a game and winning the war of the big innings.
That’s exactly what happened Wednesday when the Chanticleers advanced to the championship series with an 11-3 victory over Louisville. They scored first, six runs in the first for a big inning and easily scored over seven runs.
Coastal is 37-2 when scoring first, 37-1 when they score seven or more runs and they are 42-1 when they win the big inning war.
Sebastian Alexander is the main guy on offense for the Chants. He’s hitting .314 with 10 home runs and 54 RBIs. He’s also stolen a team-high 27 bases.
First-year head coach Kevin Schnall has named sophomore right-hander Cam Flukey as the starting pitcher on Saturday night. He’s 7-1 with a 3.29 ERA.
Jacob Morrison (12-0, 2.78 ERA) is Coastal’s ace. He missed the 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John Surgery. Schnall has given Morrison a full seven days off between starts this season. Since he started last Sunday against Oregon State, Schnall will save Morrison for Sunday and a potential matchup against Anthony Eyanson.
