A recent traffic stop in St. Tammany Parish is going viral, and not for bad reasons. Lieutenant Carli Messina with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office says last weekend, Deputy Dustin Byers pulled a driver over on Highway 21 near Bogalusa, and he noticed something about the driver.
“He was heading to a funeral, and kind of having a tough time. In the midst of it, he (Deputy Byers) tied his (the driver’s) tie for him because he didn’t know how to tie his tie properly,” Messina said.
The sheriff’s office posted the photo of Deputy Byers tying the driver’s tie on its Facebook page, and it’s been shared more than 2,500 times and has received more than 1,700 comments. The driver was going 20 miles over the speed limit; and in case you’re wondering, Messina says – yes – Deputy Byers did issue the driver a citation.
“The driver handled it very well. Deputy Byers still has a job to do. And public safety is still a high importance to us,” Messina said.
Messina says all in all, it was a very heartwarming encounter.
” It was a very good mutual understanding that Deputy Byers still had a job to do, but at the same time, could still have a lot of compassion while out on the traffic stop,” Messina said.
Hopefully, the driver can take the defensive driver course and get his citation dismissed.
