We’re coming up on yet another holiday weekend. In fact, AAA (American Automobile Association) Louisiana says it’s already here. The Fourth of July is this Friday, and AAA says it expects more than 72 million people to head out of town for the holiday, the vast majority by car. Don Redman with AAA Louisiana says the calendar this year makes for a prolonged 4th of July holiday.
“When we find the holiday, such as fourth of July, that falls on a Friday or even a close to the weekend, that just adds more people to the road who want to start that vacation. So it’s underway as we speak now,” Redman said.
Redman says with some 12 million people hitting the road throughout the Gulf South region, you can expect heavy traffic – not just this week, but next week as well.
“Don’t be surprised if you see a lot of traffic this week and then after the Fourth of July, because they may have started the vacation on the Fourth and then taken the following week off. So I would say these next two weeks are going to be very busy on the roadway,” Redman said.
Just like anything else in life, there are “dos” and “don’ts.” And Redman says one big “don’t” when traveling over the next two weeks is don’t procrastinate.
“You want to hit that road as early in the morning as possible. That’s hard to get the whole family up together to go do that.
But as long as you’re on the road and heading toward your destination, well before noon, traffic should be fairly smooth for you,” Redman advised.
