The Louisiana Supreme Court ruled Kelly Orgeron, the ex-wife of former LSU football coach Ed Orgeron, is entitled to more than $8 million of the coach’s $17 million buyout. Legal analyst Franz Borghardt says the couple filed for divorce just 43 days after Coach O signed his LSU contract.
“She’s entitled to, essentially, a one-half undivided interest in that contract as it is income,” Borghardt explained.
The Supreme Court reversed the lower courts’ former decisions with a 5-2 majority. Borghardt says he’d certainly understand an attempted appeal from Orgeron, but he’s not sure how successful that would be.
“For $8 million, I certainly would try to appeal it to a higher court. I don’t know if the United States Supreme Court would even consider taking this,” Borghardt said.
Borghardt says, barring any unexpected loopholes or reasoning, this ruling will likely be final.
“I think that a higher court would say that the Louisiana Supreme Court is in the best position to interpret Louisiana family law,” Borghardt said.
