Louisiana public schools are waiting for more information after the U.S. Department of Education told individual states it’s withholding nearly $7 billion in education grants. Executive Director of the Louisiana Association of School Superintendents, Michael Faulk, says schools were planning to use this money to pay for tutoring, after-school programs, summer activities, and professional development of teachers…
“What they’re going to have to do is put a hold on any implementation until they find out the exact magnitude of the cuts.”
Faulk says the funding pause not only hurts kids, but also adults counting on extra income…
“A lot of these title funds the district gets provide opportunities to have math and literacy coaches.”
Faulk, the says this caught school systems off guard.
“they prepared the budgets, they prepared the implementation of programs based on what was led to believe the funding for this.”
Congress approved the grant funding earlier this year, but the U-S Education Department said it holding back the money so a review can be conducted on the grant programs. No timeline was given on when the review would be completed.
