The National Hurricane Center is monitoring the gulf for the possibility of some tropical activity later this week. LSU Public Health Climatologist Dr. Barry Keim says as of right now, the odds of a tropical system forming are fairly low.
“The National Hurricane Center is giving this thing about a 30% chance of forming into a tropical depression over the next seven days, so it’s obviously something we’ll keep a watch on,” Keim said.
Keim says whatever does eventually happen with any potential disturbance in the gulf likely will not have much of a major impact on the Louisiana coast.
“This is more than likely, not going to be a big wind event or a big storm surge event. But this could be very relevant to rainfall and thunderstorms across this area,” Keim explained.
Keim says if anything, this will be a rainmaker, with the biggest likelihood being late in the week and into the weekend.
“This wave will be right off our coast, perhaps even inland, and it’s going to produce quite a bit of rain. And there’s a potential of up to five inches of rain across southeast Louisiana from this event,” Keim said.
