For the first time, the number of active registered Republican voters in Louisiana exceeds the number of active registered Democratic voters.
When examining the total number of registered voters, Democrats still outnumber Republicans in the state.
As of July 1, There were 1,095,236 registered Democrats, compared to 1,049,536 registered Republicans.
However, John Couvillon with JMC Analytics and Polling says when you remove those who haven’t voted in the last two federal elections, that changes things.
“If you were to remove inactive voters from the equation and purely focus on active voters, for the first time ever, there’s actually a plurality of registered Republicans,” says Couvillon.
Removing those inactive voters changes those numbers, according to Couvillon, to about 958,000 Republicans and 920,000 Democrats.
Couvillon says it will take a while for Republicans to overtake Democrats in the number of registered voters in Louisiana, since there are many more inactive Democrats on the voter rolls.
“Because democrats still have a two to one lead amongst inactive voters, Republicans will not likely have a lead amongst all voters probably until early next year,” Couvillon says.
Couvillon says month after month, Democrats keep losing registered voters.
“You probably had more people either changing party and/or passing away than were being replaced by new young Democrats,” says Couvillon. “If you were to look at each new month, you would see that the numbers keep dropping, and of course the source of this dropping is almost all white Democrats.”
There are 958,000 Republican active voters to 920,000 active Democratic voters.
