LSU Health Shreveport is awarded a $7.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation to launch a new research center. It’s the first NSF-funded center grant in the history of LSUHS. Dr. Oren Rom, the senior associate dean for basic and translational research, says the center will provide research opportunities for students at every level.
“The focus is mainly on basic understanding of metabolic research that can eventually have importance in metabolic diseases like liver diseases, diabetes and obesity and so on,” Rom explained.
Dr. Rom says as part of the research center, they will teach them the basic skills in biotechnology and molecular biology, specifically in the field of metabolic research to combat diseases like obesity, diabetes and liver disease.
“Eventually, they can implement these skills and knowledge into studying new treatments and new ways to tackle those diseases,” Rom said.
Rom says research into combatting those diseases is very important, especially in Louisiana.
“Louisiana is leading the charts in obesity, in diabetes, in liver disease. So it’s really important that we develop workflow to better understand those diseases, develop new treatments, new drugs, for the Louisiana population and throughout the world,” Rom said.
