The Fighting Tigers are at Vanderbilt tomorrow, and two starters on defense could miss the game. Coach Brian Kelly gave an updated injury report yesterday.
“(Aaron) Anderson, (Paul) Mubenga, those guys are probable. (Whit) Weeks and Jamari Butler are questionable and (Bernard) Gooden is doubtful,” Kelly said.
Linebacker Whit Weeks and defensive tackle Bernard Gooden are starters on LSU’s defense. Weeks’ ankle that had offseason surgery on it is bothering him, and Gooden has an injured collarbone.
LSU’s defense will be challenged with facing Vanderbilt’s No. 7 scoring offense. Kelly says the Tigers’ defense has to play disciplined throughout the entire game while doing its one-eleventh.
“The first thing I said to him is that we’re playing Navy. We’re playing triple option. You have to do your job. If you don’t do your job, they’re going to rip off a big play. You can’t go in there and say, ‘I’m just going to out-talent Vanderbilt.’ They’re going to beat you,” Kelly said.
LSU wide receiver Barion Brown only had two receptions for 22 yards in the 20-10 win over South Carolina. Kelly says the coaching staff has to be able to create more opportunities for Brown to be the playmaker he is capable of being.
“It’s really just saying, ‘Look, we recognize that we’ve got a talented player here and we got to find more touches.’ And sometimes finding those touches is circumstances in the game that allows it. But we recognize this talent, and we sometimes have to create some opportunities for them,” Kelly said.
