The amount of money Americans spend on Halloween is getting pretty spooky. Katherine Cullen with the National Retail Federation says this year’s spending will make mincemeat out of last year’s record of $12.2 billion.
“Total Halloween spending is anticipated to reach a record $13.1 billion this year,” Cullen said.
Cullen says the most popular Halloween purchase is candy, which Americans will spend almost $4 billion on this year. She says while not as many people will be buying costumes, the money spent on costumes will exceed that spent on candy – and the best part is, costumes won’t rot your teeth.
“Spending, on costumes alone, is expected to total $4.3 billion. A 13% increase from last year,” Cullen noted.
She says in all, Americans are spending big on Halloween.
“Consumers are budgeting $114 on average for costumes, candy, decorations, and greeting cards. Almost $11 more, per person, than last year,” Cullen said.
