Louisiana will allow surgical procedures to resume on Monday, April 27th that would treat an emergency or time-sensitive medical condition. Under the revised order, surgery can also take place to avoid an underlying health condition from getting worse.
“You are leaving medical professionals to decide if it is worth bringing somebody in for a procedure or should I put it off? Each professional has to make that decision,” said state health officer, Doctor Jimmy Guidry.
There’s been an ongoing legal challenge as to whether or not abortions count as essential procedures, but Guidry says under the relaxed order some abortions may proceed.
“At this point abortions that are being looked at by the professionals that do them, it would be decided whether it is time-sensitive or not,” said Guidry.
National reports show a growing problem of people canceling vital treatments that are needed for chronic issues. Guidry says this order helps encourage those folks to get back to a doctor.
“Our hope is that we can get people in for their medical care so that we can maybe deal with the things that are worse than the corona,” said Guidry.
