Governor's mansion in Baton Rouge
Oil City Republican Representative Danny McCormick is one of several lawmakers to be a part of a grassroots rally at the Governor’s Mansion in Baton Rouge on Saturday. McCormick says the goal is to send a clear message to the Governor and the state legislature.
“We trust the people of Louisiana. We trust them to make wise decisions and we don’t think the Governor should be dictating to every parish, city, and town what they could and could not do,” said McCormick.
McCormick says it is a constitutional right to work and worship.
Large gatherings have been banned as part of spread mitigation efforts, but McCormick says he does not foresee the rally becoming a super spreading event.
“I don’t know why this would be any worse or as bad as going to the grocery store, myself. I’ve never understood that. Being outside in the sunshine, we know that is where we need to be,” said McCormick.
McCormick adds there will be social distancing practiced at the event.
A huge crowd is expected as McCormick says the online event page has already generated over a thousand responses of interest.
“We’re just ready to get this ball rolling and get back to living our lives. The Governor did nothing, I mean, he just expanded the stay-at-home order without doing almost anything as far as letting us get back to our normal life,” said McCormick.
The rally starts at noon.
