There are reports LSU and head football coach Ed Orgeron are working on a contract extension. Sources say the precise details are still being finalized. Orgeron’s current deal runs through the 2021 season, Coach O $3.5 million yearly. Tiger Rag editor James Moran says news of an extension isn’t shocking.
“The fact that he is now getting extension and it’s out there now, is not really a surprise, I think this has been in the works for awhile and we’ll more about in the coming days and weeks to come,” said Moran.
Orgeron’s current base pay makes him the 36th highest paid head coach in college football, putting him in the bottom half of the SEC head coaches. Any new contract would need approval from the LSU Board of Supervisors and they next meet March 15th.
The Tigers are coming off a 10-3 season and a win over UCF in the Fiesta Bowl. The football program will also finalize a top 10 recruiting class on February 6th, the final signing period for the 2019 recruiting class.
“(News of contract extension) is good for your program, for sure” said Moran. “Stability is a big selling point whenever you are trying to convince guys to sign three or four years of their life to your program.”
