Hundreds of kids will return to the baseball diamond this weekend as the Governor’s Games and USSSA host tournaments in Lake Charles and the Baton Rouge area. Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness Executive Director Rudy Macklin says it won’t be like any tournament these players have participated in before.
“There will be no high fiving and that kind of thing. They’ll stay separate from the normal fans, have their temperatures checked, and we will make sure all of the equipment that we have is sanitized,” said Macklin.
Games will be played in Lake Charles and the Baton Rouge area. About 100 teams will participate.
Families will have to sit in one area together six feet away from other family units in the stands. Macklin says for players or parents who break the rule, you’ll have to leave.
“I don’t care how eager you are, I don’t care, I want you to do what you are supposed to do and adhere to our policies. If you don’t adhere to our policies we will have to toss you out,” said Macklin.
Macklin says he and the rest of his team will be patrolling the grounds enforcing the rules and taking notes that will help craft sporting event policy for the age of COVID-19.
“We are not going to expect to be perfect and I know that everybody is going to be looking at us under a strict microscope but this is a trial run of things to come in the future,” said Macklin.
The Governor’s games also host volleyball, boxing, gymnastics, basketball, track and field and many other sports during the course of a normal year.
