State Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley outlines COVID safety guidelines for the upcoming school year, including the mandatory use of face coverings. Brumley says school districts will have to answer to the Louisiana Department of Health if there is non-compliance.
“Face coverings should be worn in all areas of the schools, this includes the classrooms. Most importantly face coverings should be worn during arrival, dismissal, and any other transition within the school building,” said Brumley.
Individuals with severe breathing difficulties do not have to wear a face covering, along with students in 2nd grade or below.
Brumley is also encouraging school districts to make online learning available for students who do not want to return to the classroom.
Students who get sick will be quarantined on campus until they can be removed and hand washing must take place every two hours. Brumley says student health will be closely monitored.
“We are asking our schools to assess students on arrival in school and throughout the day including conducting most importantly that initial temperature check,” said Brumley.
If schools open under Phase Two contact sports and band will not be allowed, along with groups over 25 people, which appears to indicate sports practice may be off the table.
Brumley says if a student or teacher tests positive the Department of Health will consult with the district on whether the school needs to close. Brumley says that means a positive case of COVID-19 will not necessarily mandate that a classroom or school be closed.
Schools that are ordered closed may have to stay closed for three to five days.
